The problem
Insurance: An antiquated industry
Insurance: An antiquated industry
Repairmen and builders working as damage assessors for insurance companies rely on outdated, manual processes to evaluate damage, compile reports, and communicate findings to insurers.
This leads to a cascade of inefficiencies: repetitive data entry, error-prone reports, frequent back and forths, and wasted time across the board.

A revolution of the assessment process
A revolution of the assessment process
The founders’ concept was for a mobile app that allowed assessors to complete their damage assessments on-site, receiving policy recommendations in real time.
The project goals? A design could demonstrate to stakeholders:
Faster assessment completion time
Improved reporting accuracy
Lower communication overheads and increased transparency

My task was to translate the client’s concept into a high-fidelity, interactive native mobile prototype for funding pitches and user testing.
I designed the end-to-end workflows that accommodated first-time assessors and experts, not just meeting their on site processes but transforming them.

"Lukas quickly got to grips with the details of our product and delivered a design that exceeded our expectations.
His knack for coming up with smart solutions and refining ideas [made] his work a huge part of how we communicate our vision in these early stages... We couldn't recommend him more highly"

A 2.5 week sprint meant meant designing lean and fast:
I leveraged the founders' expertise as a proxy for assessor insights - the client had deep domain knowledge and regular contact with assessors.
I started with rough concepts and a basic user story, then rapidly iterated toward a polished, functional prototype.

Understanding and defining the user flow
Understanding and defining the user flow
Via an early whiteboarding session with the client, I mapped out the ideal end-to-end user flow and the more narrow main 'Form' flow to ensure the app catered to assessors' real world needs.
I was able to identify assumed bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the existing workflow that could be validated and improved upon through design. I also uncovered some less obvious functionalities early, such as the need for assessors to move non-linearly between several competing Forms.

With V1 of the user flows established, I wireframed the Damage Assessment Form flow, engaging the client early to align my direction with assessors needs.
While I moved to mid-fidelity, the client was testing earlier screens with assessors. This feedback loop allowed me to pivot quickly. Designing multiple options for several screens and flows allowed the client to A/B test on the go, allowing us to move fast and validate the structure and IA before progressing.

A future-proofed design system
A future-proofed design system
Given the 2.5 week sprint, I prioritised building out a design system early on, ensuring I could keep consistency across the app while maintaining flexibility in responding to client and user feedback.
I adopted an Atomic Design methodology, creating small components first that could scale and combine into larger components as the app grew or evolved. When a last-minute branding overhaul required significant changes to the entire product, the design system made it a breeze to incorporate the changes without sacrificing time or quality.

I broke the traditionally complex damage assessment form into bite-sized steps — one data point per screen, with clear progress indicators to maintain orientation.
This transformed a text-heavy slog into a guided experience that reduced cognitive load, improved accuracy, and minimised drop-off.

New users needed guidance. Experienced assessors needed speed.
I designed duplication functionality that let seasoned users clone previous entries as templates — skipping repetitive input and increasing productivity on high-volume jobs.

VC funding and user praise
The prototype secured significant venture capital funding for the startup.
Assessors praised the design for modernising a severely outdated process and intuitively addressing real workflow pain points, estimating it would speed up their assessment times by up to 50%.
